PRESS HERALD - The city's Ward 5 will have a new city councilor for the first time since 1993.
Ward 5 in Saco will have a new city councilor for the first time since 1993. After a recount, Alan B. Minthorn was confirmed in the winner of the Ward 5 City Council race in Saco, city officials said Monday.
The original tally had put Minthorn up over 11-term Councilor Arthur Tardif by just three votes, triggering the recount.
The recount found Minthorn, who owns an insurance company called Maine Senior Insurance, edged Tardif out by just two votes. There were 18 blank ballots and two write-ins.
Minthorn, 58, had not been elected to office before. He has campaigned for his son, state Rep. Justin Chenette.
Tardif, 74, was a Saco police officer for 26 years and is an associate real estate broker.
